Hey Everyone, I am Barrett, the original Paycheck Pioneer.
Like most of you I was raised to go to school and find a good paying job with good benefits and
work really hard for the security of that paycheck every other Friday. And like me, most of you have probably found that even that strategy is not as easy as it used to be. But for those of us that do succeed in landing a secure job, is it ever really enough?
Does working for someone else year after year and making them richer while you still struggle sound all too familiar? What about meeting all of your individual goals and maxing out your yearly “cost of living” raise at 2-3% while average inflation stays at 4%+ and gas and other utilities can easily swing 5-10% more year over year depending on what political climate we’re in.
And even when you feel like you have budgeted your money and have found a way to cope with rising costs of insurance, and rent, and groceries, but you have the essentials covered and can be content. Well, every week, every day really, we are bombarded with hundreds if not thousands of new products and services. And this is happening exponentially more and more every generation. You think you get life figured out and are happy, and then there’s a brand new product or service that is launched that you’re all of a sudden told you can’t live without.
I think about my parents when I was a kid and living paycheck to paycheck, and that was before ANY cellphone, and home internet, or anything. You manage to get by year after year, but then there’s flip phones and simple basic cell phone service you now have to fit in your monthly budget, then there’s home internet that you “need.” Then phones become “smart” and you have to add texting and data services just to keep up with everyone else. And I just kept wondering how people do it. Most of us have lived on a fixed income, yet at every turn society is telling us we need to consume more and more.
Music has always been one of my hobbies, and any fellow musician knows it is not a cheap hobby. Instruments, amplifiers, cables, cords, microphones, every little piece you don’t think about costs so much money. And every week there’s new versions that are better and the next best thing. There’s always a new accessory for my truck I’d like to have, a new kitchen gadget my wife would love, a new piece of furniture that would look great in the spare bedroom, and thousands of new toys and products for the dogs. How do you keep up? How can you continually feel content in life when you’re always being told about all the things that you don’t have but that you “need?”
That’s what got me thinking about how it seems very few people are able to truly make a living working in their passions. I know musicians who play music full time, but it’s usually doing 2-3 FOUR hour shows every day down on Broadway playing for tips, and 12 hours later many days maybe taking home what they could have working a 6 hour shift at McDonald’s. But hey, they at least had a lot more fun than a shift at McDonald’s right? Well, maybe a little. But it’s still such a grind, and even McDonald’s has more guaranteed hours and benefits. So how can you truly work with your passion but not be a slave to your bills?
The answer is, it’s not easy. And you’ll likely have to keep that day job with the little bit of security it provides while you take every extra hour you have and start applying it to your passion. But in the age of the internet, the good news is, you can do it from your couch, or anywhere else you feel most comfortable.
My wife and I love country living. We bought a small farm property in Tennessee and love spending time with our dogs, horses, and chickens. But to get a good job we were driving an hour into town, and blowing all our time in commuting and making other companies rich, and by the time you just get the basic maintenance done on the farm on the weekend and get all the animals taken care of, there’s hardly any time left to enjoy them. But what if you could reverse that and have all the time to enjoy the things you want, and in the very little time left over to keep your “paycheck” flowing?
The early pioneers in our country had to find new ways to do EVERYTHING. Nothing had been done before, so they had to blaze the trail ahead and create ways to do things for the first time. And even today there are so many industries where we see “pioneers” blazing the trail and finding creative new ways to do things. And it’s with that spirit that got me thinking about new ways to turn our passions into profit.
So remember all those products and services we were just talking about that you are continually bombarded with? Of course you do. you’ve probably seen several advertisements for them just in the time you’ve read this. Especially if you have the TV on in the background. And that my friends is marketing. All of these products and services don’t sell themselves. It takes constant promotion and marketing. And with the right kinds of marketing, companies can make very simple products seem like “must-haves.” Remember the pet rock? They wouldn’t have sold even one of those without the right marketing. And in this new digital age, most of that marketing is now being done online-and not just by big corporate teams with marketing degrees and corner offices.
Marketing is done by ALL of us. Think of the last time you tried a new product, a new service, or even a new sandwich. You probably told some people about it, if it was good. Or maybe you told even more people about it if it was bad. And you probably didn’t even have to physically be around people to tell them. You probably Tweeted, Facebooked, Instagramed, or Snapchatted about your experience before it was even done. That’s the amazing thing about the internet and social networks. And all the big brains of all the big companies are making us do a lot of the marketing for them. What’s sad is they want most of us to do it for FREE! Well that’s great for them, but what if it COULD be great for us too?
That’s why I started Paycheck Pioneers. I want to show you how we started thinking differently about where our paycheck comes from and how to pioneer a new way to do things. And I’m going to show you how you can do it too. There are thousands of companies out there who are already wanting to enlist your help to promote everything they are trying to sell, and they want to pay you to do it. It may not be a lot for each product, but if you follow our journey we will take you through step-by-step how to make the most of every offer, every campaign, every promotion, and every sale.
And the best part? You already have hobbies. You already have interests, and you already have passions. You already have things you like to talk about and promote to other people. You don’t have to go work a job doing something that you don’t even care about, selling products that you hate, working with people you don’t even like. You have passions that you would be doing even if no one was paying you. But it’s time to quit that. Start getting paid to do what you love, and we’ll show you how to turn your #PassionN2Profit and become a pioneer yourself.
Follow our blog, and sign up for our mailing list, and you’ll get all of our tips delivered straight to your inbox. This is a journey we’re just beginning, but I want to take you with me every step of the way. They always say there is strength in numbers, and just like the early pioneers, let’s all be successful together!
-Barrett, the Paycheck Pioneer
Hi Barrett,
Interesting post! I really connected with the idea of internet marketing being somewhat of a pioneer idea. I’ve got a fledgling website that I’m trying to get off the ground and grow it into a business too – it’s a lot of work, but the idea of earning a paycheque without having to do the commute (and in my case, find a babysitter) is very exciting. I do find though, that the very idea of affiliate marketing just isn’t well known – people give me a glassy-eyed look when (if) I talk about my goals with them. “Oh, you have a mommy blog”? Sometimes I just say “sort of” and move on. Yeah, I feel like a pioneer too.
Wishing you and your wife all the best as you pursue “the dream”!
Marlaine
Thanks Marlaine. It definitely is a lot more than a “mommy blog” I know. I wish the idea was more well known, but I also see that as a huge opportunity. A way to teach people about something that is relatively so simple. Sadly, so many people don’t have the follow through, because in our society everyone wants instant results. Trying to sell crockpots in a microwave world is frustrating at times, but when you get home after a long day and have a great crockpot meal that has been simmering for hours, it sure does taste a whole lot better than a frozen microwave dinner!
Hello Barrett
Thanks for sharing with us about yourself.
I agree we are all brought up to get good education, get the best job we can find then work till we retire, what they forget to tell us that working for someone lese you are always broke, always at their mercy if/when you need a vacation or whatever.
I agree with you that cost of living keeps going up and salaries stay more or less the same, simple things like short vacations have to be well planned for the few who can still afford it, while the majority have to do with a day at the beach.
Most people have to live from paycheque to paycheque, but at the same time making the employer rich.I have never heard of Paycheck Pioneer so im looking forward to visit your site as it evolves and read more.
Thanks,really enjoyed reading about you.
Thanks for your comments Roamy. I’m hoping to really enhance my site, and with loyal followers help everyday people find ways to enhance their lives. Online marketing may not become everyones primary job or income stream, but it can definitely provide a few extra dollars that may help you buy that new toy you’ve been wanting, or help plan that week at the beach!
